Pierre Morrissette

Founder & Executive Chairman, Pelmorex Corp (Formerly Pelmorex Media Inc.)

Born in Montreal, Pierre completed a degree in Economics at Loyola College in 1968. He completed a Masters Business Administration degree from the Ivey Business School in 1972.

Pierre began his career with the Royal Bank of Canada in 1972. He joined Telemedia Communications Inc. in 1977 as CFO. He then joined Canadian Satellite Communications Inc. (Cancom) as President and CEO in 1983. During his six years at Cancom, it was named one of Canada’s most rapidly growing companies and completed a very successful public issue.

Pierre left Cancom in 1989 and founded Pelmorex Media Inc. The company purchased The Weather Network and MeteoMedia in 1993. Under Pierre’s direction, the Pelmorex team has transformed the company as the undisputed leader in the weather-related information services market in Canada as well as a leader in multi-platform digital information services. As one of the top media brands, the company’s television, web, and application services connect with more than 20 million Canadians every month, most of them every day. The company has expanded internationally in countries such as Spain, U.K., and the U.S. The company has also acquired Beat The Traffic, a multi-platform routing and navigation service, which operates in Canada and the U.S.

In addition to his duties at Pelmorex, Pierre is a member of the Advisory Council for the Pierre L. Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship at the Ivey Business School. He is a trustee of the Pierre L. Morrissette Family Foundation and the Mental Wellness Network Foundation. Pierre was a member of the Rogers Wireless Board from 1990 until 2005. He has served on numerous industry boards including the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) and was inducted into the CAB’s Broadcast Hall of Fame in 2006.

In August 2010, Pierre received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa from Western University and was awarded the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 award in Ontario for the Media & Entertainment Category. In 2012, Pierre was the recipient of the Ivey Distinguished Service Award. Most recently, Pierre was a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal that is presented to Canadians to celebrate significant contributions and achievements, and to recognize their dedication to their fellow citizens, community, and Country.
