Carolyn de Voest, a sought-after business performance and leadership expert, is passionate about helping subject matter experts—such as accountants, lawyers, and engineers—transition into thriving business leaders. Drawing from her vast experience, de Voest emphasizes the importance of intentional planning, team alignment, and clear accountability in fostering sustainable growth.
“Many of my clients are incredibly skilled in their professions but find themselves needing support in areas like crafting a vision, mobilizing a team, and engaging employees,” de Voest explained in a recent interview. “These are critical elements of running a successful business, but they aren’t always natural strengths for subject matter experts.”
She began her company in 2008 and is based in Vancouver.
Her approach focuses on leadership development, communication, and strategic execution. “We help businesses ensure they have a plan, that everyone knows their role in that plan, and there’s clarity on how success is measured,” she said. “Often, businesses fall into the cycle of just reacting—react, react, react—without pausing to ask if they’re even headed in the right direction.”
De Voest also shared insights into her work with family-owned businesses, a niche she’s passionate about due to the unique challenges they face.
“Family businesses come to me for guidance, particularly when they’re considering transitions, whether it’s leadership changes or preparing for a sale,” she said. “These are deeply emotional transitions where personal and professional ties are so intertwined.”
When asked about the key to navigating such transitions, de Voest highlighted the importance of understanding. “I start by asking a lot of questions—about the family relationships, the legacy of the business, and their dreams for the future,” she said. “It’s not about giving advice right away. It’s about listening and understanding, because every family dynamic is different.”
Transitioning family businesses often grapple with complex emotions. “It’s tough because so much is interwoven—retirement plans, legacy, and family relationships,” she explained. “But I firmly believe in the resilience of family businesses. As long as they’re communicating and staying healthy as a unit, they’ll find their way forward.”
De Voest’s expertise was on full display during a recent forum panel discussion at the Vancouver Business Transitions Forum, where she joined other thought leaders in tackling pressing business issues. Reflecting on the event, she said, “I think the panel went great. We answered a lot of important questions and provided actionable insights.”
Having previously presented virtually during the pandemic, this event marked her return to in-person engagements. “I love speaking and training, whether it’s at conferences or with groups like the forums,” she said.
“It’s rewarding to connect with people and see those lightbulb moments.”
As businesses continue to face challenges in growth and transitions, experts like Carolyn de Voest remain invaluable. Her mix of strategic insight, empathetic leadership, and practical tools is helping business owners write their next chapter with confidence and clarity.
